Condair EL “Cylinder Spent” Message: What It Means and How to Clear It

A “Cylinder Spent” message on a Condair EL humidifier means the control software has detected that the steam cylinder is filled with scale and can no longer deliver the required output. Replace the cylinder, then reset the maintenance cylinder in the Service menu. If the reset is not done within 72 hours of run time, a fault message appears.

What the “Cylinder Spent” message means

The Condair EL is an electrode steam humidifier. Its steam cylinder is a disposable part that wears out as minerals from the water build up inside it. “Cylinder Spent” is the control’s own conclusion that the scale has reached the point where the cylinder cannot deliver the output the unit is asking for (Condair EL Series Operation Manual, p.17).

The decision is demand-based. The manual does not give a fixed number of operating hours for a cylinder, and neither do we. How long a cylinder lasts depends on the water supply and on how many hours the unit runs, so a cylinder in one building can reach this message long before an identical one in another.

The EL status LED gives a quick read on how serious the unit considers the situation. The key on p.14 of the manual is:

  • Green: operating, humidifying.
  • Flashing green: standby.
  • Yellow: a warning is present or maintenance is due.
  • Red: a fault is present and humidification has stopped.

The 72-hour figure matters because it is the limit on the reset. The cylinder has to be replaced and the maintenance cylinder reset in the Service menu. The manual states that if the cylinder is not replaced and the maintenance cylinder is not reset within 72 hours, a fault message appears. The 72 hours are run time, not calendar time. The manual excerpt we worked from does not give the button sequence for the Service menu, so follow the menu instructions in your unit’s operation manual rather than a sequence copied from a forum.

How to replace the cylinder and clear the message

  1. Confirm you have an EL. The message and the 72-hour window come from the EL operation manual (2582954-A). Other Condair models have their own manuals and their own messages.
  2. Record the message and the LED color. Write down the exact message text and whether the LED is yellow or red before you touch anything. It tells you whether the unit is still humidifying.
  3. Read the number on the old cylinder. The cylinder number, for example 311 or 605, is printed on the cylinder label. If the label is unreadable, read the humidifier nameplate and note the model, capacity in lb/hr, voltage and phase.
  4. Match the number. Look up your capacity and voltage in the EL table of our Condair and Nortec cylinder cross-reference. If the number on your old cylinder differs from the table, match the old cylinder: some units shipped with an alternative cylinder chosen for local water conditions.
  5. Isolate the unit. Remove power and apply your site’s lockout/tagout procedure. Let the cylinder cool before you handle it. Steam cylinders run hot and at line voltage.
  6. Replace the cylinder. Follow the cylinder replacement procedure in the EL operation manual. We do not reproduce it here because we have not verified every step against the manual.
  7. Restore power and reset. Reset the maintenance cylinder from the Service menu, as the manual describes. Do this inside the 72-hour run-time window.
  8. Confirm the unit is clear. The message should be gone and the LED should return to green (operating) or flashing green (standby).
  9. If the message returns soon after a new cylinder, compare the cylinder number you installed with the nameplate data again, then contact us with the model and serial number. The manual gives no hour figure to compare against, so a quick return is a reason to recheck the match, not to assume a defect.

Which cylinder replaces a Condair EL

There is no single EL cylinder. The correct number depends on the unit’s capacity in lb/hr, its supply voltage and whether it is single- or three-phase. The EL table in our cross-reference article pairs those values with cylinder numbers such as 202, 311 and 605. We point you there instead of repeating the table, because the operation manual excerpt we worked from does not contain a model-to-cylinder matrix.

Two practical checks avoid most ordering mistakes. First, the number on the old cylinder label is the fastest match when it is readable. Second, if your cylinder number is not linked in the table, send us the model and serial number and we will check it.

Genuine cylinders and third-party cylinders

Condair’s published position is that most humidifier manufacturers require proprietary cylinders for specific units, and that third-party cylinders can cause malfunctions. For a unit that is already reporting a spent cylinder, a mismatched replacement adds a second variable to the problem. For a wider look at when exact-match parts matter, see our guide to OEM vs. aftermarket HVAC parts.

Scope: This article covers the Condair EL series, as described in the EL operation manual 2582954-A (LED key p.14, “Cylinder Spent” and the 72-hour reset window p.17). Condair RS, GS and other lines, Nortec-branded units with different controls, and humidifiers from other manufacturers have their own manuals and are not covered. Check yours.

Before you order

Confirm your unit’s exact model and serial number from its nameplate before ordering, and read the cylinder number off the old cylinder if you can. Search the number in our site search, or browse the Condair & Nortec humidifier parts collection. If the number you need is not listed, use our request a quote page, or contact us at help@totalhvacparts.com and we will help confirm fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the maintenance cylinder on a Condair EL?

After replacing the cylinder, reset the maintenance cylinder from the Service menu (EL Operation Manual, p.17). The manual excerpt we used does not give the button sequence, so follow the menu steps in your unit’s manual. Do it within 72 hours of run time or a fault message appears.

Condair cylinder spent but the humidifier is still running. Can I wait?

The manual does not say whether the unit keeps humidifying while the message shows. It does say a fault message follows if the cylinder is not replaced and the maintenance cylinder is not reset within 72 hours of run time, and red means humidification has stopped. Order the cylinder now.

Which cylinder replaces a Condair EL?

It depends on capacity (lb/hr), voltage and phase. Read the number on the old cylinder label, then check the EL table in our cylinder cross-reference. If the label is gone, use the humidifier nameplate data.

Can I use a third-party cylinder in a Condair EL?

Condair states that most humidifier manufacturers require proprietary cylinders for specific units, and that third-party cylinders can cause malfunctions. Match the number on your existing cylinder, and contact us with your model and serial number if you are unsure.

Condair EL humidifiers operate at line voltage and produce hot water and steam, and a used cylinder stays hot. Service should be performed only by qualified personnel, following Condair’s operation manual for your unit and your facility’s lockout/tagout procedures.
